AWS Data Platform for AAA Game Launch
We delivered a complete AWS-native data platform in under 4 months when a AAA studio's existing analytics provider deprecated their service before launch.
Key Results
The Challenge
An acclaimed AAA studio was preparing to launch a major title when their data platform provider deprecated their service with no replacement. Without functioning analytics, they had no visibility into player behavior, game performance, or business metrics—untenable for a AAA release.
Our Solution
We delivered an AWS-native data platform using Kinesis for streaming ingestion, Lambda for serverless processing, Glue for ETL, and WAF for security. The architecture ensures real-time telemetry flows from game clients and servers into storage and analytics systems.
Technologies Used
The Challenge
When your data platform provider deprecates their service months before your game launch, you have a problem. Our client—an acclaimed AAA studio—suddenly had no way to capture player telemetry, monitor game health, or generate business intelligence.
Without a functioning data platform:
- No visibility into player behavior or engagement
- No monitoring of game client and server health
- No observability into live operations
- No data-driven decision making post-launch
For a AAA release with significant marketing investment, this was untenable. They needed a complete replacement platform delivered before launch.
Our Approach
Streaming Architecture
We built a real-time data pipeline using AWS Kinesis for streaming ingestion and Firehose for reliable data delivery. This architecture ensures game events flow continuously from client and server into storage and analytics systems without batching delays.
Serverless Processing
AWS Lambda functions handle data transformation and processing, providing automatic scaling without infrastructure management overhead. This was crucial for handling the variable load patterns typical of game launches—quiet during off-hours, massive during events and promotions.
Security-First Design
We integrated AWS WAF to protect all data ingestion endpoints. With the platform receiving traffic from millions of game clients, security couldn’t be an afterthought.
Data Integration
AWS Glue provides the ETL backbone, enabling data integration across sources and feeding downstream analytics and business intelligence tools.
The Results
We delivered a complete data platform replacement on a fixed-bid basis, becoming one of our team’s favorite projects due to the quality of collaboration.
- Critical business capability restored before launch
- Real-time telemetry from game clients and servers
- Game health monitoring and observability established
- Data-driven insights across business functions
- Seamless handoff to the studio’s operations team
"Terminal Velocity restored our ability to make data-driven decisions. The platform was delivered on time and has been rock solid since launch."
