Production Server Infrastructure for Multiplayer FPS
We delivered a production-ready Linux server binary, hardware performance analysis, and vendor evaluation for a multiplayer FPS studio preparing for launch.
Key Results
The Challenge
A game studio preparing to launch a multiplayer FPS needed help with their server infrastructure: a production-ready Linux server binary, hardware performance analysis, and a thorough evaluation of their chosen hosting platform—including presenting critical findings to the vendor directly.
Our Solution
We structured a focused 3-month engagement delivering the Linux server, cross-architecture benchmarking, and an honest vendor audit. When our evaluation revealed critical issues with the hosting platform, we presented findings professionally to the vendor with the studio leadership present.
Technologies Used
The Challenge
Launching a multiplayer FPS means your server infrastructure has to be bulletproof from day one. Our client needed three things before they could go live:
- Production Linux server binary optimized for their multiplayer game
- Hardware performance analysis with recommendations for deployment
- Honest evaluation of their chosen game server hosting platform
The third item was sensitive. They’d already committed to a hosting vendor, but needed an independent assessment of whether the platform would actually work for their needs. Whatever we found, we’d need to present it professionally—potentially delivering critical findings directly to their vendor partner.
Our Approach
Linux Server Development
We delivered a performant Linux server binary optimized for their multiplayer FPS architecture. This required deep understanding of their game systems and ensuring the dedicated server could handle production loads with the responsiveness competitive players expect.
Hardware Performance Modeling
We conducted cross-architecture benchmarking and analysis to provide hardware performance recommendations. This included building dedicated test scenarios—we brought in an engineer specifically to create realistic game simulations for performance testing.
Vendor Platform Evaluation
The most sensitive workstream. Our evaluation of the game server orchestrator produced critical findings. Rather than just handing over a report, the studio head asked us to present directly to the vendor.
We did so diplomatically, with studio leadership present for support. The findings were technical and actionable, not adversarial. The vendor relationship survived, but the studio made informed decisions about mitigations.
The Results
- Production-ready Linux server delivered on schedule
- Hardware recommendations based on rigorous benchmarking
- Critical vendor findings presented professionally
- Client trust earned through honest, diplomatic communication
- Informed deployment decisions enabled before launch commitment
"Terminal Velocity delivered everything on time and handled the vendor presentation professionally. They earned our trust by being honest about what they found, even when it was awkward."
